WeatherDoes the BCRC league participate in any community charity events?
Yes. The BCRC Coaches and the Carroll Manor Coaches join together for an afternoon basketball game of fun for charity. All proceeds collected at the door are donated to a local Frederick charity. The game takes place the Sunday before Super Bowl (end of January) in the Tuscarora High School gymnasium. All parents and players are encouraged to attend to support your coach, your league, and your community!
What is Draft/Skills Night?
Draft/Skills nights are for kids that are new to the league, for kids who’s last year coach is not returning, or for kids that wish to change teams. This night will give the coaches an opportunity to assess your child’s skill level.
Does my child need to attend the Draft/Skills Night?
If any of the above situations apply, then YES, your child needs to attend. Players should check-in at the Registration Desk and get a draft number (applied to front & back of shirt). The Assistant Program Director or designee will run the draft and will provide instructions to the kids. The schedule will be posted on the REGISTRATION PAGE of the website.
What kind of fundraisers will I be asked to participate in?
Fundraisers are needed to help defray the costs of the program, to help purchase new equipment, and to offer hardship scholarships to struggling families. Fundraisers will be announced and posted on the website. Those families that participate will be given a discount on registration fees the next year.
Can I sponsor a team?
Should you or your company wish to sponsor a team, please send an email to bcrcbasketball@comcast.net. Table runners with your logo (and the words “Proud Sponsor of BCRC Basketball”) will be purchased and assigned to a team. The team will display the table runner on the score/clock table in the gymnasium for the duration of the game. The table runner will travel with the team to all game locations throughout Frederick. Please send an email to obtain the Sponsorship Program pricing.
When are games played?
Games are typically played on the weekends but if a game is canceled, a make-up game can be scheduled on a weeknight. Games are approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes long with 4 eight minute quarters. Half time is approximately 10 minutes long but may be reduced by the officials to keep the game on schedule. The Game Schedules are located on the SCHEDULES & DIRECTIONS PAGE of the website.
Will there be games on Sundays?
Yes, there will be times when your team will be scheduled to play on Sunday.
Will my child play each game?
BCRC has a 50/50 play rule which means that all kids on the team will be played equally during the regular season. The coach will make every attempt to play the kids equally but be patient and lenient . . . the coaches are, after all, only human! During playoffs and championships, the coach will play all the kids but the amount of playtime is based on the coach’s discretion. If you have a question about playing time, it is up to you to address the situation with your child’s coach.
Does the league offer any financial assistance?
Yes. Part of the funds raised each year is earmarked to assist up to 12 families (who have fallen on hard times) with their registration fees. If your financial circumstances have changed and you are requesting assistance, please send your request to bcrcbasketball@comcast.net for consideration. All requests will be kept strictly confidential and you will be notified if you have been chosen to receive a full or partial scholarship.
What forms of payment do you accept?
You may pay with a credit card if you register online (via paypal). If you are registering in person, you may pay with a personal check, cash, or money order made payable to “BCRC”.
What happens if my check is returned?
Checks returned by your bank will carry a $35 administration fee along with the amount needed to make good. Your child will be suspended from practices and games until the funds are made good by cash or money order only.
What is the refund policy & when can I receive my refund?
Refunds must be requested in writing and are subject to league approval. If a refund is requested before November 15th, a 100% refund will be approved. If a refund is requested between November 15th and December 1st, a $20 administrative fee will be deducted from your refund. No refunds will be approved after December 1st (medical emergencies will be considered and if approved, will be pro-rated accordingly).
Approved refunds will be issued and mailed after January 1st of the current season calendar.
When are team pictures taken and when do they come in?
Team pictures are taken in mid-December and are delivered to the league around the 3rd week of January. Orders are given to the coaches for distribution to the parents/players.
Does my child still need to show up for the pictures even if I don’t plan on buying anything?
Yes. Your child is part of the team and needs to be in the team picture for those families wishing to purchase pictures. The team pictures are also given to the coaches as a “thank you” and they are displayed on the website.
How often is practice?
There are typically two 1-hour practices per week. Practices will be held at any of the following gyms: Ballenger Elementary, Orchard Grove Elementary, Tuscarora Elementary, Ballenger Middle, or Trinity School. Practice days will be consistent throughout the season unless it becomes necessary to reschedule due to school closings. Shorts, tee shirt, and basketball sneakers should be worn for practices. The practice schedule is posted on the website under the SCHEDULES & DIRECTIONS PAGE and should be viewed frequently for updates.
When does registration begin?

How long is the winter basketball season?
There will be 9-10 games during the regular season. The 1st game for all teams begins the first Saturday in December. The regular season will end the third weekend in February with playoffs and championships being played the last week of February and the first week of March.
Does the league value good sportsmanship?
Yes. Your good conduct (as a parent) during practices and games is expected. You set the example for good sportsmanship for the players, so please refrain from baiting the referee’s, opposing players and coaches. The referee has the power to assess technical fouls on parents, as well as, players and coaches. Should the situation warrant it, they may also demand a spectator to leave the premises for misconduct. Forfeiture of the game will occur if the person does not vacate the premises. Any parent ejected from a game will automatically be banned from the next game.
How will I know what team my child is on?
Teams are assembled the last week in October after the skills/draft nights. The coaches assess the player’s skill level and begin drafting players to form their teams. The rosters are delivered to the coaches around the 1st of November. The coaches will contact their players to introduce themselves, inform them of their practice nights, location of practice, and time. If you have not heard from a coach by November 4th, please send an email to bcrcbasketball@comcast.net. The coaches contact information can be found on the TEAMS PAGE of the website.
Does my child need to wear a uniform?
Yes. Uniforms are required to play in a game. No uniform – no play . . . your child may sit the bench and cheer for his/her fellow teammates.
What kind of tee shirt, socks, & shoes are allowed to be worn with the uniform?
You are not required to wear anything under the jersey but if you wish to wear something you may wear a white sleeveless tank or white sleeveless tee shirt (sometimes referred to as wifebeaters). This is the only approved garment to be worn under the jersey. Tee shirts with sleeves are not an acceptable part of the uniform. White socks and basketball sneakers (player’s choice) are also required.
Can my child wear his uniform from last year?
The uniform may be worn from year-to-year as long as it still fits and is in good condition.
How do I purchase or replace the uniform?
You will have 3 opportunities to purchase a uniform. (1) You can purchase online at the same time you register online. (2) You can purchase at one of the Open Registration Nights in early October. (3) You can purchase at Draft/Skills Night around the 3rd week of October (see schedule posted on the REGISTRATION PAGE of the website). A full uniform (jersey and shorts) is $35 (+tax), a jersey sold separately is $24 (+tax), and shorts sold separately are $16 (+tax). THERE ARE NO REFUNDS ONCE A UNIFORM HAS BEEN ORDERED.
Can my child try on a uniform before purchasing it?
Sample uniforms will be available to try on for sizing at Open Registration and Draft/Skills nights.
When do I receive the uniform?
Uniforms are received by the league by December 1st. There will be a “Uniform Distribution Night” for the parents to pick up their child’s uniform. The date will be posted on the website. If you are unable to pick-up your child’s uniform, it will be given to your child’s coach.
I’d like to volunteer to Coach . . . is there any guidance available?
There will be 2 Coaches Clinics held – one in late October and one in late November. New coaches are required to attend at least one of the clinics but are strongly encouraged to attend both. It is optional for BCRC returning coaches (with at least 2 prior years with the league), but encouraged. The clinics will be approximately 2 hours long.
Are there other ways I can help?
Consider volunteering for scorekeeping, clock running, or team mom. All help is greatly appreciated and is a great way to get really involved in your child’s team.
Do I need prior experience to keep score or run the clock?
Prior experience is always helpful but not a must. The coach can sit with you and give you a lesson on how to keep the score book or how to run the clock. All parents will be asked to help out with at least one game in some capacity.
What does a Team Mom do?
The Team Mom helps the coach with the administrative function sending weekly emails to the team reminding them of practice and game schedules, picture dates, fundraising info, coaches charity game, etc. The coach may ask for assistance in recruiting help for the scorebook and the clock. The team Mom also helps the coach plan the end-of-season team party.
How do I know if practice or games are canceled due to bad weather?
Instructions for cancelations are posted at the bottom of the HOME PAGE. As information becomes available, it will be posted under “Breaking News” of the HOME PAGE. You should stay in communication with your coach via cell phone and text, whichever the preferred method is, for last minute changes and updates.
